Assam Accord completes 35 yrs: How safe are its indigenous people?

Clause 6 of the Assam Accord has not yet been implemented even though the Accord was signed 35 years ago. The central government, however, has issued a notice for the formation of a committee that would work on the implementation of the Clause.

New Delhi:As the historic Assam Accord completed 35 years today, the critical question that remained unanswered is how safe are the indigenous Assamese people. Clause 6 of the accord which guarantees the constitutional safeguard of the indigenous Assamese people has largely remained on paper.

Of late, the central government has published a Gazette Notification regarding the formation of a 13-member committee for the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

Justice (Retired) Biplab Kumar Sharma of Gauhati High Court has been appointed as the chairman of the committee. The committee also held its first meeting in Delhi on the 24 July.
