AASU, NESO called for 2-day strike over JNU violence

The student unions- All Assam Students Union (AASU) and North East Student Organisation (NESO) called for two days long strike in the northeastern states against the attack on the staffers and students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday.

New Delhi:Condemning the recent violence in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), All Assam Students Union (AASU) and North East Student Organisation (NESO) on Tuesday have called for a two-day-long strike in the northeastern states.

The student organisations have also vehemently criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the entire incident and demanded a statement from them.

"Both Prime Minister and Home Minister tweet instantly on other issues, then, why there is no such statement issued by them, where the life of many students are under threat in one of the prestigious University of our country," said AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya.

The chief advisor further added that law and order come directly under Home Ministry, "so it is the sole responsibility of the Home Minister to give a statement on such a violent incident."

Stating that AASU and NESO have called for a two-day-long strike on Wednesday and Thursday, Bhattacharya asked the government to provide academic security to the students.

"Students come here for study...but such kind of incidents is spreading wrong conceptions about the reputed university," added Bhattacharya. He said that during the two-day long strike, there will be black flag hoisting across the northeastern states as a mark of protest.

"With this strike, we would like to remind the government that students across India are united and we (AASU & NESO) are with students fraternity," said Bhattacharya.
