AAMSU Demand SC ruled SOP for finalising NRC

Demanding that NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela should follow the Standard Operating Procedure laid down by the Supreme Court, the All Assam Minority Students Union staged a protest at the Jantar Mantar.

New Delhi: Alleging anomalies in the NRC process, the All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) on Tuesday staged a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The AAMSU demanded that National Register of Citizen (NRC) coordinator Prateek Hajela should follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by the Supreme Court.

The student union also submitted a memorandum to Union Home Secretary Rajib Gauba in support of their demand.

In the memorandum, AAMSU leaders have also demanded for DNA tests in connection with determination of parental linkage, if the necessity arises for enlisting each and every genuine Indian citizen in the final NRC.

Claiming that people have to travel close to 500 km for their claims hearings, AAMSU adviser Azizur Rahman said that the hearing venues should be fixed within reasonable distance, within the same districts of the people being called for disposal of claims and objections.

In the ongoing claims and objections process, people whose names were left out in the previous list of NRC can now claim to include their names in the final list.

Earlier on May 20, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had called on Home Minister Rajnath Singh and appraised him about the steps taken to publish the final NRC by July 31.

The Supreme Court had earlier issued SOP with the objective that the process of claims and objections be fair and transparent and must provide a reasonable opportunity to all concerned.

As anticipated, the NRC issue in Assam has again come to the limelight following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections. Both the Central and State governments are set to publish the final NRC by July 31, as directed by the Supreme Court.
