East Godavari (Andhra Pradesh): A month after the alleged custodial death of father-son, Jayaraj and Benix, in Tamil Nadu, a fresh case of police brutality has surfaced from Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district where a scheduled caste youth, Varaprasad, was allegedly thrashed by Sitanagaram police who then tonsured his hair and moustaches.

According to the reports, a violent clash broke out after the youth hindered the path of a truck carrying illegal sand. The moment he tried to stop the vehicle, the driver, who is also a follower of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) local leader Kavala Krishnamurthy, contacted him and narrated the whole scenario.

Following which, the YCP leader lodged a complaint against the youth in Sitanagaram police station.

Subsequently, police reached the residence of the youth and arrested him without bestowing any notice.

"When I tried to stop the lorries, they slandered me badly and then trounced me. After some time, a local leader Krishnamurthy came to the spot and tried to kill me. Luckily, I escaped from the spot", said Varaprasad.

Police tonsured hair and moustaches during the police custody

"Within an hour police arrived at my residence and took me to the police station. There, they had again flogged me badly and tonsured my hair and moustache", alleged the youth.

Subsequently, he was shifted to the Rajahmundry government hospital after receiving multiple bruises over his head, legs and hands.

Soon after the family members visited the injured youth, the brutality by the police has become a talk of the town.

When it was taken to the notice of DGP Gautam Sawang, he visited the victim's house. Later, the DGP has suspended SI Firoz and a constable for their alleged involvement in the case.

"Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the SI and the constable under the SC/ST Act, 1989. The police department will not tolerate these kinds of brutality against any of the accused even if he/she has multiple charges of the crime," said DGP.
