Perumallapuram (Andhra Pradesh): There are different types of Vadas (South Indian Snack) that can be made from lentils which taste savoury and are very famous. However, in Perumallapuram, East Godavari district Vadas prepared are sweet and completely unique in it's kind.
Locally known as 'Bellam Garelu', these vadas are soaked in jaggery soup for some time and got its name in the same way. These mouth-watering Bellam Garelu have a history of 70 years.
In 1940, a couple started a small hotel in Perumallapuram and started making Bellam Garelu which also became a famous dish of the hotel. In fact, the village itself became popular because of Bellam Garelu.
