Bellam Garelu: Famous Perumallapuram Vada

Bellam Garelu is a famous and different kind of Vada that is made in Perumallapuram, AP. The Vada tastes sweet as it is soaked in sugar syrup after it is prepared.

Perumallapuram (Andhra Pradesh): There are different types of Vadas (South Indian Snack) that can be made from lentils which taste savoury and are very famous. However, in Perumallapuram, East Godavari district Vadas prepared are sweet and completely unique in it's kind.

Locally known as 'Bellam Garelu', these vadas are soaked in jaggery soup for some time and got its name in the same way. These mouth-watering Bellam Garelu have a history of 70 years.

In 1940, a couple started a small hotel in Perumallapuram and started making Bellam Garelu which also became a famous dish of the hotel. In fact, the village itself became popular because of Bellam Garelu.

Recently the woman died at the age of 105 years. But her son and grandson are continuing the tradition of selling people's favourite dish with the same taste.

Many cinema actors have too tasted the amazing Bellam Garelu and experienced its heavenly taste.
