AP: Villagers attack SI, prevent cops from moving suicide victim's corpse, booked

Villagers attack policemen for moving the body of a suicide victim in Vishakapatnam's Pendurthi village. An SI was injured and the villagers have been booked on a complaint from the cop.

Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh): A Sub Inspector (SI) in Andhra Pradesh's Vishakhapatnam was injured following a brawl with the villagers of Pendurthi on Tuesday. The injured identified as Rambabu was attacked at Pendurthi village when he was clearing a way for the ambulance with the body of a 37-year-old Achayamma,

Police said they were pursuing a woman missing complaint which led to the lifeless body of Achyamma being located. Preliminary investigations revealed that Achayamma had died by suicide after she was issued a notice by the revenue staff in a 70-yard land dispute in Govindapuram, Pendurthi.

Trouble brewed, when police made arrangements for the transport of the body to a government hospital for a postmortem examination. However, the police went ahead and brought the ambulance to the spot. The husband of the deceased identified as Chinna Babu stopped the ambulance claiming that he was not allowed to see his wife.

The villagers joined issue with Chinna Babu and demanded that the body should not be moved. Rambabu intervened and attempted to clear the path for the ambulance to leave with the corpse. In the melee that ensued, Rambabu was allegedly thrashed by the villagers before the ambulance left the village.

Rambabu suffered a fracture on his leg and was admitted to a hospital for treatment. Based on Rambabu's complaint, the police had registered another case against the villagers on charges of preventing the government servant from discharging his duties and attacking him. (with ANI inputs)
