Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has moved the Supreme Court against the Telangana government for not giving the legitimate share of water to Andhra Pradesh, hence depriving them of the right to life and causing immense hardship.

The plea contends that the availability of water has been "seriously prejudiced by depletion in Srisailam Dam project as well as other projects such as the Nagarjuna Sagar Project and the Pulichintala Project."

It also alleges that Telangana is in violation of the "Bachwat Award" made on 31st May 1976 and express provisions of the 2014 Act, "whereby State of Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh."

The plea has sought directions to the Telangana government to notify jurisdiction as per the 2014 Act. It has also sought to let Andhra Pradesh take control of common reservoirs of Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar and Pulichinatal Reservior along with their outlets.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had previously written to Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat demanding that the operational control of the Srisailam reservoir be handed over to Telangana.

The CMs of both states also took part in a meeting chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat last year to try and resolve the water dispute between the two southern states.
