Tokyo Olympics, Day 6: Dominant Great Britain thump India 4-1 in Hockey

The Indian team did all it could but the limited experience at a big stage as the Olympics was clearly visible with shots missing in the D area compounded by missing penaltly corners.

Tokyo: A dominant Great Britain led by forward Hannah Martin on Wednesday beat India 4-1 in their third match of Pool A here at the Oi Hockey Stadium South Pitch on Day 6.

The Indian team did all it could but the limited experience at a big stage as the Olympics was clearly visible with shots missing in the D area compounded by missing penalty corners.

Here's quarter-wise report of the match:

First quarter:Hannah Martin opened the account for Great Britain in flash. It took the opponent just two and a half minutes to score the first goal. Savita Punia couldn't save it in the D as an early attack was launched by the world number 3 team.

Second quarter:The goal in this quarter was smade in the 19 th minutes of the game. By this time, Martin scored her second goal of the match. But there was no lack of intensity from the Indian despite being down 2-0, and this helped Olympics debutant Sharmila Devi scored a goal 23 minute.

By half time, India were trailing 2-1.

In the 27th minute of the game, a golden chance was lost in penalty corner after Rani Rampal fell down. Dragflicker Gurjeet Kaur could not convert it into goal as the ball kept swinging and twirling.

Third quarter:India tried hard but couldn't compete against a superior Britain side. With Salima Tete down, the quarter saw the opponent scoring a goal again. India, by this time, had missed over 5 penalty corners.

Fourth quarter:Another goal from Britain and it was all over for India.

Earlier, India were hammered by the mighty Netherlands in the campaign opener followed by a 2-0 drubbing against Germany.
