Abu Dhabi: Veronika Kudermetova beat Anett Kontaveit in the first round of the Abu Dhabi Open on Wednesday, overcoming the tenth seed in straight sets for the loss of six games.

The world number 46 then broke in Kontaveit's first two service games of the second set and went on to seal a 7-5, 6-1 victory with a love game.

It was Kudermetova's third win over Estonian Kontaveit in as many career meetings - all three victories coming in straight sets.

Next up for Kudermetova will be a meeting with the winner of the first round match between Yaroslava Shvedova and an as yet undetermined qualifier.
