US Open: World No. 78 Grigor Dimitrov stuns Roger Federer in a five-set clash

New York: World No. 78 Grigor Dimitrov pulled off an upset victory in the US Open quarterfinal as the Bulgarian defeated Swiss legend Roger Federer for the first time in his career at the Flushing Meadows.

On Tuesday night at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Dimitrov came from two sets to one down and defeated the five-time champion 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted more than three hours. The 28-year-old had never beaten the third seed in seven previous meetings, winning just two of 18 sets in those matchups.

Federer, 38, the oldest major quarter-finalist since a 39-year-old Jimmy Connors made the semi-finals of the 1991 US Open, made 61 unforced errors to only 41 for Dimitrov in the last-eight clash which kept fans to the edge of their seats. The Swiss converted only four of the 14 break points he earned.

In the semi-final, Dimitrov will play in-form fifth seed Daniil Medvedev, who defeated Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to become the youngest men's semifinalist at the US Open since 2010.
