Tokyo (Japan):The organising committee of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Monday rolled out the motto for this year's Olympics, “United by Emotion”, which they said reflected the “universal values” and “unifying power of sport”.

"Crowds of spectators who do not know each other prior to the Games will come together and learn that there is more that unites them than divides them,” Tokyo 2020 said as it unveiled the motto.

Quick Facts about Tokyo Games

The Motto emphasises the power of sport to bring together people from diverse backgrounds to connect and celebrate in a way that reaches beyond their differences.

Although the official Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” or “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, but each host city chooses its own motto to accompany that edition of the Games.

London's motto in 2012 was “Inspire a Generation”, whereas Athens in 2004 went for “Welcome Home” -- a nod to the birthplace of the Games in Olympia.

The Games motto will be displayed - in English only - in a variety of environments and applications, such as at competition venues, on city street decorations and on licensed goods.

This motto summarises the ideas and concepts that the host city of Tokyo wishes to share with the world.

While reflecting the essential values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the motto incorporates a specific and timely message embracing diversity, reflecting the 2020 zeitgeist in the urban environment of Tokyo.

The Games will bring together athletes from more than 200 National Olympic Committees and the Refugee Olympic Team, as well as millions of spectators and media representatives.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will take place from July 24 to August 9.
