Hyderabad: Take a look at the important sports stories that failed to receive its due recognition.
- Sanju Samson, the wicket-keeper batsman, has been included in India's playing XI for the third and final T20I against Sri Lanka in Pune. Samson got a game in place of Rishabh Pant, whose glovework has been under the scanner for quite some time now. Although Samson's inclusion delighted his fans on Twitter, the wicket-keeper added an unwanted record to his name at the same time. Sanju Samson made his T20I debut for India in 2015 with a game against Zimbabwe but he got to play his second match in the shortest format after a gap of five years.
- Archer Sibangini Gohain, who got injured while practising for the Khelo India event in Guwahati, is said to be stable as per preliminary investigations and is undergoing treatment at the AIIMS's Trauma Centre in New Delhi, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner said. The 12-year-old Gohain, an archer from Dibrugarh had met with an accident while practising for the Khelo India event in Guwahati and was airlifted to AIIMS's Trauma Centre on Thursday.
- The Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal has been nominated for the 'World Games Athlete of the Year' by the sport's governing body FIH. In all, 25 athletes have been nominated for this award from their respective sports by their international federations and in Rani's case, the FIH has recommended her name for the award for her outstanding performances and her ability to lead by example, Hockey India said in a statement. "We at Hockey India are elated by the news of Rani being nominated for the World Games Athlete of the Year 2019. She indeed is a huge inspiration to many in the country and has made her own mark in the sport," stated Mohd. Mushtaque Ahmad, President of Hockey India. The winner will be decided by online voting which closes on January 30.
- The third Khelo India Youth Games has begun in Guwahati with a grand opening ceremony this evening. A colourful cultural event enthralled the spectators. In all, 6,500 athletes are taking part in the Khelo India at 20 disciplines. Inaugurating the games, Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal said that the Assam Government has taken various steps to promote sports.
- Indian women's rugby player Sweety Kumari has been named the ‘international young player of the year’ by reputed women’s rugby website, Scrumqueens. The 19-year-old explosive winger was also picked as the ‘continent's fastest player’ by Asia Rugby earlier. Sweety who hails from Newada village, in Barh tehsil of Patna was a sprinter before she switched to rugby. She followed her brother into athletics, but on the insistence of secretary of the state rugby association she tried out rugby. Her pace and ability to tackle the defenders without losing out her on her speed have made her a talent to watch out for.
