Olympic gold medalist turns food delivery boy to make ends meet

Limardo, 2012 London Olympics gold medalist, didn't give up his first love fencing. He will once again go for glory at the Tokyo Olympic Games next year, and for that, he is undergoing intensive training.

Lodz (Poland): Venezuelan Olympic gold medal-winning fencer Ruben Limardo has been struggling to make ends meet amid the COVID-19 pandemic. So, he has become a food delivery boy for Uber Eats in Poland.

The 35-year-old 2012 London Olympics gold medalist, however, didn't give up his first love fencing. He will once again go for glory at the Tokyo Olympic Games next year, and for that, he is undergoing intensive training. But last week he left everyone surprised when he made a tweet revealing the nature of his present job.

"You have to earn your way and this is a job like any other," he was quoted as saying by a news agency.

But he is not the only one, 20 other members of Venezuela's national fencing team are doing the same job to make their ends meet in the town of Lodz in Poland.

"We are all delivery riders," said Limardo.

He is the first fencer from Latin America to win Olympic gold in fencing since Cuba's Ramon Fonst won it in 1904.

At the same time, Limardo is also the second Venezuelan gold medallist, 44 years after boxer Francisco Rodriguez.
