Boxer Vikas, Neeraj and Satish cleared to resume training

Chennai: The excitement among the male boxers and coaches appreciable as they get ready to resume training from Monday after completing their seven-day quarantine. The female boxers have already begun their training at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala on July 21.

Women boxers could start their training early because they were shifted to a different wing from the male boxers and coaches where a doctor tested positive. The coaches- Kuttappa (men’s), Mohammad Ali Qamar (women’s) and Chhote Lal — too will be completing the quarantine period.

The SAI has finally submitted a report on possible quarantine rule violation by three boxers — World Championships medallist Vikas Krishan, professional boxer Neeraj Goyat and Asiad medallist Satish Kumar on Friday.

The SAI said the boxers admitted their mistakes but the enquiry panel headed by SAI secretary Rohit Bharadwaj found it to be unintentional. The body has found deviations in implementation of the SOP by the local administration of Patiala and recommended corrective measures.

Based on the committee's recommendations, it has been decided that health guidelines issued by the state government and SAI will be strictly followed during the time of reentry into the centre after completing a mandatory quarantine period.

Recommendations

1) Strict implementation of quarantine norms of the state government, SOP and guidelines otherwise issued. These are to be implemented without exception.

2) An education programme for athlete and coaches about quarantine norms SOP be undertaken during the time of entry into the centre, upon completion of quarantine.

3) Conduct of regular awareness programmes for all stakeholders

4) The nomination of a dedicated officer to supervise the camps. All information and decisions regarding SOP to flow to coaches and athletes through this officer, to ensure clarity.
