The Bundesliga was suspended on 13th March with all but two of the teams having played 25 of their 34 matches in the campaign.

The next set of fixtures are due to take place between 16th and 18th May.

Schalke face the daunting task of travelling to Borussia Dortmund for an often feisty 'Ruhr Derby' on Saturday.

Football in the country's top two divisions will get going again without spectators and with a range of other conditions designed to prevent another COVID-19 outbreak, including the continuous monitoring and testing of players.

Earlier, the German league announced on Thursday that it has pushed back the planned restart of the Bundesliga from Friday, May 15, until the following day.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has granted permission for the Bundesliga to resume behind closed doors with strict hygiene measures, plus regular testing of players and backroom staff.

Christian Seifert, CEO of the German Football League (DFL), confirmed on Thursday that matches will resume on Saturday, May 16.

Defending champions Bayern Munich, who sit four points clear of Dortmund, will travel to face Union Berlin on the Sunday.

The Bundesliga will be the first of Europe's top leagues to restart since the coronavirus pandemic forced lockdown measures across the continent.
