Tottenham Hotspur open their sprawling $1 billion stadium

The official homecoming for Tottenham Hotspur will end their 680 days long wait when they will play Crystal Palace in the Premier League on April 3. For around two years Tottenham played their 'home' matches at Wembley.

London: As teenager Rayan Clarke served a pass off the centre spot at Tottenham Hotspur's sparkling new stadium it kicked off a new chapter for the North London club on Sunday (March 24).

The occasion also marked the end of a long exile for Tottenham's fans. Around 30,000 fans thronged their new stadium to watch the U-18 match between Tottenham and Southampton at the 62,062-seat arena.

Tottenham will play Crystal Palace in their first home Premier League match on April 3.

What makes the new stadium amazing is its sprawling size and architecture. The club spent whopping $1.32 billion to retain an essence of the old White Hart Lane and the spirit of Tottenham.

Meanwhile, Maurizio Pochettino, son of manager Mauricio Pochettino, appeared as a second-half substitute for Tottenham U-18 while his father watches him play from the grandstand.

Mauricio Pochettino has established Tottenham in the top four in England and steered them to the Champions League quarter-finals addressed fans at halftime.

“The old ground was magic, but this is going to be unbelievable,” Pochettino said.

“I remember the feeling when we played our last game there, it was emotional and we were crying, today the feeling is the same, " he added.

Pochettino acknowledged the vision ofclub chairman Daniel Philip Levywho, in his programme notes, dubbed the day as a historic one for the club he has run for 18 years.

Tottenham’s 2,533rd and last competitive match at the old White Hart Lane ground, where the 36,000 capacity limited their ability to compete financially with city rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, was a 2-1 win over Manchester United in May 2017.
