Raheem Sterling awarded for fighting racism

The former Liverpool player said the example of his former captain Steven Gerrard encouraged him to try to develop into a role model

London: Manchester City's England striker Raheem Sterling has been awarded The Integrity and Impact for speaking out against racism against footballers. Sterling's work was recognised for using his persona to fight out the social stigma- racism. He said that more action required to eradicate this problem.

At the same time, Sterling urged his contemporaries to speak out if they face racism while playing a game.

The 24-year-old earlier said that clubs should have to pay the price if any of their fans indulged in racist behaviour. Sterling said that clubs should be handed automatic nine-point deductions and ordered to play three games behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, England manager Gareth Southgate received the Leadership in Sport Award on behalf of the FA for building a new atmosphere in the dressing room which helped his team reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.
