The PSG superstar Neymar was named permanent captain for Brazil by head coach Tite in September 2018.
Neymar's club and national side teammate Alves replaced him after recent disciplinary issues put him under the scanner.
In a statement released on Monday, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said: "The decision was communicated to Neymar by Tite on Saturday."
Dani Alves is Neymar's PSG teammate. This month, French football authority banned Neymar for three matches after he hit a fan following PSG's defeat by Rennes in the Coupe de France final.
