Abu Dhabi: The name Chris Gayle is the most familiar with twenty 20 cricket. Though he played all three formats of the game at the highest level, it is the T20 cricket which witnessed the best of the Universe Boss, as Gayle is affectionately called by his millions of fans across the world.
Now on Friday evening at Abu Dhabi, the batting maestro has added a mindboggling record to his illustrious T20 career. The left-hander has become the first cricketer in the history of T20 cricket to hit 1000 sixes. The Jamaican achieved the one-of-its-kind record during the 2020 Indian Premier League match between Kings XI Punjab, the team for which Gayle plays, and Rajasthan Royals.
Gayle smashed eight sixes and six fours during his whirlwind 99 off 63 against the Royals. He missed his 23rd T20 ton and seventh in IPL by a whisker from Jofra Archer. Gayle hit a six off Archer in the 20th over to reach 99, but then in the next ball, he was bowled by a stunning toe-crusher from the bowler from Barbados. Earlier, Gayle was dropped twice which proved costly for the Royals.
