Hyderabad: Mumbai Indians held their nerve as they thrashed Chennai Super Kings in the last ball thriller to lift the fourth Indian Premier League title, here, at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, on Sunday.
With the win, Mumbai have become the first ever IPL team to win four IPL trophies. Mumbai had also won IPL title in 2013, 2015 and 2017.
Chasing a fighting total of 150 runs, Chennai's start was decent as Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis added 33 runs for the first wicket.
Du Plessis geared up Chennai's innings in the fourth over as he smashed Krunal Pandya for a couple of fours and a six. However, Krunal had the last laugh as removed the South African on the last ball of the over.
Raina walked to bat at number three following Du Plessis' departure. However, southpaw never looked in good touch and eventually lost his wicket to Rahul Chahar. After Raina's departure, Ambati Rayudu joined Watson at the crease.
Rohit Sharma brought Jasprit Bumrah back into the attack in 11th over and the Indian rewarded his captain's trust by removing Rayudu in the same over. Dhoni joined Watson in the 11th over.
MS Dhoni got into a mix with Watson in 13th over and lost his wicket for a run out while trying to steal a run on an overthrow.
Dwayne Bravo walked to bat at number six when Chennai was reeling at 82/4.
Watson anchored Chennai's innings from the other end as CSK kept losing wickets on a regular interval.
Bravo along with Watson added 51 runs for the fifth wicket before Bumrah removed the Windies from the attack.
Watson got into the mix with Ravindra Jadeja on the third ball of the fifth over as he fell short of the crease and walked back after scoring 80 runs.
Watson's innings was laced with 8 fours and four sixes. Following Watson's departure, Shardul Thakur joined Ravindra Jadeja at the crease but was not able to guide CSK to win.
Chennai Super Kings bowlers put up a superb performance as they restricted Rohit Sharma-led Chennai Super Kings to a mediocre total of 149 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.
Batting first, Mumbai openers Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma gave MI a flying start as the duo added 45 runs in just 4.5 overs.
During their partnership, De Kock was the explosive one as he hammered Deepak Chahar all over the ground in the third over. Shardul Thakur gave Chennai it's the first breakthrough by removing the South African from the attack and soon Rohit followed suit.
De Kock's 29 runs knock was laced with four sixes. Rohit scored 15 runs off 14 balls with the help of one four and one six.
Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan join hands in sixth over following the departure of Mumbai openers. Both Yadav and Ishan stablished Mumbai's innings as the duo snitched 37 runs for the third wicket. However, just when the duo started to rebuild their side, Tahir removed Suryakumar from the attack.
Batting at number five Krunal Pandya departed without adding many runs for his side on the scoreboard. Kieron Pollard joined Ishan Kishan in 13th over when Mumbai was reeling at 89/4.
Ishan became the second victim of Imran while trying to escalate Mumbai's innings in the 15th over. Ishan scored 23 runs off 26 balls with the help of three fours.
Chennai Super Kings squad Power hittingHardik Pandya walked to bat at number seven after five Mumbai batters were sent back to the pavilion. Pandya along with Pollard took charge of Mumbai's innings as the duo added 39-runs for the sixth wickets in 3.3 overs.
Deepak Chahar broke Pandya and Pollard's partnership by dismissing the Indian from the attack. On the fourth ball of the same over Deepak removed his cousin Rahul Chahar from the attack.
Pollard smashed 41 runs off 25 balls with the help of three fours and three sixes.
For Chennai, Deepak Chahar bagged three wickets while Shardul Thakur and Imran Thair bagged two each.
