And now this MANKADED is the word on which former Indian skipper Sunil Manohar Gavaskar expressed his reservation into.

"It really has been depressing and disappointing reading the Indian media over the last few days. The lack of respect shown to an Indian legend and referring the run-out by a bowler as 'Mankad' is indeed very sad", lamented Gavaskar.

The history of this controversial word dates back over 70 years ago when a foreign scribe described the run out of Bill Brown - the non-striking batsman of the Australian team for being out of his crease by Indian legendary bowler Vinoo Mankad as 'Mankaded'.Incidentally , in the match between India and Australia , Bill Brown was warned on multiple occasions by Vinoo Mankad who finally ran the former out. Even the legendary Sir Donald George Bradman found the action nothing wrong.

Gavaskar also supported his reaction by the following facts :

  • A batsman staying at the crease even after knowing the ball kissed his bat is not referred as doing a WG - the legendary batsman of yesteryears.
  • Former Australian skipper Steve Waugh claimed a catch to dismiss the West Indian Brian Lara even after knowing that the ball bounced before . These type of actions isn't being described as doing a Waugh. same way, "why these kind of run outs be called "Mankaded" tarnishing the legend's name", asked Sunny.

Gavaskar also questioned why that incident of run out be called as "Browned" rather than Mankaded ? Which he felt have tarnished the name of Vinoo Mankad to a great extent.
