IND vs AUS 3rd ODI: Australia register consolation win; beat India by 66 runs

India could not register a whitewash over Australia as the visitors registered a consolation win by 66 runs at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium in the third and final ODI.

India will be aiming to register a whitewash over Australia with senior players coming into the squad whereas Australia would look to get back on the winning track after five straight losses.

Rajkot: Australia dished out a clinical show both with the bat and the ball as they trounced India by 66 runs in the third and final ODI which was played at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium here.

After choosing to bat, Australian batters led by Steve Smith (74) justified skipper Pat Cummins's decision and posted a challenging 352/7 on the board and then bundled out the Men in Blue for 286. Part-time spinner Glenn Maxwell then ran through the Indian line up and was ably supported by other Australian bowlers. India failed to capitalise on a strong start and lost the plot in the middle overs.

However, India won series 2-1 after winning the first two ODIs played in Mohali and Indore respectively. Both the teams straight away head to the Cricket World Cup and India will start their campaign against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Mohammed Siraj was the last man to be dismissed as Australia bundled out India for 286 and recorded a 66-run win.

Debutant Tanveer Sangha trapped Ravindra Jadeja (35 off 36 balls) in front of the wicket as India lost its ninth wicket. Jadeja became Sangha's first international wicket, which he would cherish for a long time. Left-handed batter Jadeja, who was playing in front of his home crowd, unsuccessfully reviewed the decision.

Glenn Maxwell was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors and he returned with figures of 4/40 in his 10 overs. The visitors are just two wickets away from registering a consolation win. Jasprit Bumrah was the eight batter to be dismissed as he was caught by Marnus Labuschagne off skipper Pat Cummins, who got his maiden wicket.

Pacer Josh Hazlewood removed Kuldeep Yadav (2) in the 42nd over as India lost its seventh wicket. Hazlewood picked his second wicket of the evening as Australian bowlers dished out a clinical performance.

The evening belonged to Glenn Maxwell, who took his fourth wicket. This time it was Shreyas Iyer (48 off 43 balls), who was cleaned up by the part-time spinner in the 39th over. Iyer his a lone four and two sixes before making the long walk to the pavilion. It was just a matter of time for Australia to register a consolation win as the Men in Blue still needed over 100 runs.

KL Rahul (26 of 30 balls) failed to convert his start as he gave a skier to Alex Carey off Mitchell Starc, who clinched his first wicket. India were in spot of bother at 223/4. Shreyas Iyer was looking solid in the middle and was joined by fellow Mumbaikar Suryakumar Yadav. The required run rate has climbed over nine run per over.

Shreyas Iyer, who smashed a brilliant hundred in the last game at Indore and KL Rahul are taking the game deep. The duo has so far added 32 runs in 31 balls even as India has passed the 200-run mark. The required run rate has gone past 8 per over.

Glenn Maxwell struck for the third time. This time he removed a set Virat Kohli (56 off 61 balls), soon after completing his fifty. The former India captain was caught in the deep by Steve Smith. Virat hammered five boundaries and a lone six. Maxwell was bowling to perfection as he has got scalped all the three Indian wickets.

Skipper Rohit Sharma missed a deserving hundred as Glenn Maxwell lobbed off a return catch. Rohit, who was looking in fine touch, was dismissed on 81 on the final ball of the 21st over. The Mumbaikar hammered five boundaries and as many as six maximums in his 57-ball fiery knock. Rohit Sharma now has second highest runs against Australia (2,332) in the fifty over format and is only behind cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar (3,077 runs)

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli conjured an unbroken 50-run stand. Virat walked down the track and smashed Mitchell Starc for a straight six as the hosts inched closer to the mammoth target. After 20 overs, they were poised at 135/1.

Virat Kohli was also looking in his elements as he started on an aggressive note. The famed Delhi batter hit two successive boundaries off rival skipper Pat Cummins in the 16th over as India raced ahead in the chase.

Part-time spinner Glenn Maxwell provided Australia the much-needed breakthrough after he dismssed Washington Sundar (18 off 30 balls), who was caught in the deep by Marnus Labuschagne in the deep. Washington and Rohit added 74 runs for the first wicket. In walked, star batter and former skipper Virat Kohli.

Skipper Rohit Sharma, who got a life notched up his fifty, in the 10th over. The Mumbaikar was in his elements and was taking the Australian attack to cleansers. Washington, who survived a run-out, was playing second fiddle to his skipper.

Rohit, who raced to 28 off just 19 balls. kept playing his shots with ease while Washington played second fiddle. Rohit was in his usual self and was pummelling the Australian attack to submission.

In a surprise move, all-rounder Washington Sundar opened with skipper Rohit Sharma, who started on an aggressive note. India raced to 18/0 after three overs. Rohit slammed two boundaries and a six on a belter.

Mitchell Marsh's stroke-filled 96 and Marnus Labuschagne's polished 72 took Australia to a commendable 352 for 7 against India in the third and final ODI. While Marsh missed reaching triple figures by a whisker, Australia's batters came good collectively in what will be their last official ODI before the start of the World Cup. Opener David Warner had himself to blame for his dismissal after a fiery 56 off 34 balls (6x4s, 4x6s), but he set the tone for Australia early on.

Seasoned campaigner Steve Smith also put brakes on his poor run of scores to make a rapid 74 and towards the end, Labuschagne upped the ante with his 58-ball knock to help Australia post their challenging score. Labuschagne also became Australia's top run-getter in the ongoing calendar year.

Indian bowlers made their comeback after leaking some quick runs in the first 25 overs. Australia, once looking for 400 runs mark had to settle for 350 runs mark. Australia were at 215/1 after 28 overs and they ended up on 353/7 after their 50 overs. Mitchell Marsh who missed out on a well-deserved century by four runs was the highest scorer for Australia. Indian bowling attack was led by India pacer Jasprit Bumrah who picked three wickets in his 10 overs.

Marnus Labuschagne gets to his eighth half-century for Australia in ODI cricket. He is the only frontline batter currently batting, who can take Australia to 375 run target. But he will definitely need support from Cummins who can play some cameos with the bat.

Kuldeep Yadav gets his second wicket of the match. Green went for a big shot to complete Australia's 300 in a style but resulted into a simple catch at Long On to Shreyas Iyer.

Australia crossed the 250-run mark in the 35th over. Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey trying to build a partnership after losing two wickets in quick time.

Double blow for Australia, Steve Smith lost his wicket. The straight ball hit the pad and Smith got trapped in front of the stumps, Siraj gave another breakthrough for India. Smith walks back to the pavilion on a well-made 74 off 61 deliveries with eight fours and a six. Wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey came to bat at number 5.

Marsh missed out on well well-deserving century. He played a half-hearted drive straight into the hands of Prasidh Krishna covers. He was struggling with heat during his innings at Rajkot. Marsh's last five scores in ODI cricket - 96, 4, 71, 6, 29.

Steve Smith completed his 30th ODI half-century in 43 balls with five fours and a six. Jasprit Bumrah is back into the attack. Australia is all fired up as Mitchell Marsh leads the attack batting on 73 off 64 deliveries. He has hit 10 fours and two sixes.
