Virat Kohli could face one-match suspension for breaching ICC's Code of Conduct

In the final over of day three of the second Test, Kohli had a heated chat with umpire Nitin Menon relating to the Decision Review System.

Chennai: Indian skipper Virat Kohli could face a one-match suspension for breaching ICC's Code of Conduct. Kohli got involved in an argument with umpire Nitin Menon after the umpire's call went in favour of England captain Joe Root.

In the final over of day three of the second Test, Root managed to survive an LBW appeal off the bowling of Axar Patel. The delivery hit Root on the back of his pad before it was caught by wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant.

As umpire Nitin Menon declared him not out, India went for a review but Ultra Edge showed nothing. However, the ball-tracking showed that the impact in front of the stumps. But, the decision still went in Root's favour as the ball had landed outside off and the TV umpire asked Menon to stick to his original decision.

Kohli immediately walked towards umpire Nitin Menon and had a heated chat with him.

Getting himself engaged in an argument with the umpire, Kohli breached the Article 2.8 in the ICC’s Code of Conduct that covers “dissent at an Umpire’s decision” and “arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the Umpire about his/her decision”.

Thus, the punishment for such an offence could draw Level 1 or Level 2 charges for Kohli, resulting in one to four demerit points. The Indian captain already has two demerit points to his name.

A total of four demerit points within 24 months result in a player being suspended for one Test/two ODIs or T20Is.

India won the second Test by 317 runs to level the four-match series 1-1.
