Cardiff: Sri Lanka were unable to cope with New Zealand's seam bowling, with Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson taking three wickets apiece for their side to eventually win by ten wickets on Saturday.
Opener Dimuth Karunaratne achieved the rare feat of carrying his bat through a Cricket World Cup innings, but his teammates offered little resistance as New Zealand dismissed Sri Lanka for 136 in 29.2 overs.
Meanwhile, justifying booing from Sri Lankan supporters after the island nation suffered a terrible defeat at the hands of New Zealand, Karunaratne said that fans have invested their time and money and travelled all the way to Cardiff. They deserve a good show.
SL skipper Karunaratne defends fans' boos “They have come from far to Cardiff and they spend their time and money and come here to see [a] good match. I think we need to give them a little bit [of a] chance. They all want us to win, so I think losing doesn’t matter, but we need to give a good fight for them. I think that’s the main thing. If we get out for like 130, you know, there is no match. So we have to give them a good show end of the day,” Karunaratne said.
Sri Lanka will next lock horns with Afghansitan on June 4.
