In the sudden turn of the event, Stokes left the field and entered the dressing room. New batsman Jonny Bairstow even walked in to bat when the TV replays showed that Joseph overstepped.
As per the previous rule, once the batsman left the field, he can't be recalled. But, in April 2017, the rule was modified and came into effect in October 2017 as "Misapprehension Rule".
This new rule allows batsmen to resume his innings if he is given out wrongly as long as the next ball isn't bowled.
Taking the new rule into account, umpires called back Stokes and he ended the day on 62 not out, with England scored 231 for 4 at the end of day one against Windies.
When Stokes was asked about this bizarre incident, he said, “I was just sat in my chair with my pads on and then I thought someone had got out because of all the shouting, but then the shout was ‘no-ball and you’re in’ so just bizarre. I just had to get myself back into the right frame of mind out there. I had to try and let it go and make sure I was not out at the end of the day.”
Apart from the incident, which cast a shadow on Stokes' prolific innings, the southpaw was in good touch from the very onset of his innings. He completed his half-century off 84 balls and hit six boundaries.

While talking about his innings he said a few minor technical changes helped him to accustom the situation.
“I watched myself score a hundred against New Zealand at Lord’s [in 2015] before this game to remind myself of a technique where I’d done well and I took it out there with me,” Stokes said.
“That is a catalyst for how I want to play. I was just trying to find the right tempo between being too aggressive and being too defensive. I think I was a bit stuck over the last couple of months, but watching the video this morning did me the world of good," he signed off.
