Brisbane: The day after India battled to draw the Sydney Test match, Australia captain Tim Paine has apologised on Tuesday for his poor on-field behaviour as the tension kept rising on the final day at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Paine, who dropped three catches on the final day, said, "my leadership wasn't good enough...and yesterday I fell short of my expectations and our team standard, so. I'm human. I want to apologize for the mistakes that I made yesterday, certainly, as I said, not not a reflection of the way I want to lead this team."

Paine's first mistake came in the 40th over of the Indian innings, when Pant had scored just three.

In a pressure-cooker atmosphere at the SCG on Monday, Paine engaged in a verbal duel with India's Ravichandran Ashwin.

The fourth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series starts on Friday.
