Soon after taking the charge, 47-year old Ganguly addressed the press conference and gave insights into some gruelling talking points in the Indian cricketing spectrum at present.
Here are the top 10 key points from Ganguly's first press conference as BCCI chief:
Ganguly's first press conference as BCCI president
- There was a similar sort of a situation even when I became captain of India; things need to be brought back in place, reforms need to be done, huge amounts of money needs to be paid to state associations. I find myself in a position where I can make a change and it's a challenge. I’ll do it the way I know with no compromise on credibility. That’s the way I led India and that’s the way I’ll take this organisation forward. It’s a very young team, so we have to do a lot of hard work. We all must understand we are here to work for Indian cricket.
- The organisation belongs to the members, they had no say in the last three years. There have been no AGMs, no working committees. Hopefully in the next few months, we can put everything else and bring normalcy back in Indian cricket. For the last three years, there was an emergency-like situation in the BCCI, which can be overcome by all the members.
- BCCI accounts haven't been passed. This was a general body meeting, not the annual general meeting so accounts need to be passed at the AGM. We'll call an AGM in three weeks' time and pass it. We also need to go through it because we are new so we don't have an idea of what expenses have happened in the three years.
- I will speak to Virat Kohli tomorrow [on Thursday]. He is the most important man in Indian cricket as captain of India. I look it at that way. So we will have a word with him and as I said we will support him in every possible way, he wants to make this team the best in the world.
- We will support Kohli, we will listen to him. I have been a captain myself so I understand. Mutual respect will be there, opinions and discussions will be there and we will do what is best for the game. India have been a great team to be honest with the way they have played in the last three to four years. We have not won a World Cup but one doesn't win a World Cup every time.
- Kohli wants Tests to be played at only five Indian venues. Addressing the issue Ganguly said, 'In terms of Test venues, we have a lot of states, lot of venues, so we will have to sit with him [Kohli] and see what he wants and take it forward."
- We have to make sure the best tournament in the country (Ranji Trophy) is competitive, and it remains important to everyone now because that's where you get the Kohlis and MS Dhonis, Ajinkya Rahanes and Rohit Sharmas of Indian cricket. So that structure has to be the best, both structure-wise and financially, and that will happen. That will be the first thing that will be done by the Apex Council.
- We have to create the CAC because the CAC will appoint a lot of selectors and other members which are important part of Indian cricket. We will do that and we will make sure they don't have any conflict of interest.
- ICC matter is important for everyone to know, India is supposed to get 372 million dollars from the ICC in the five-year cycle, which is a lot heavy at the back end. Because there are two World tournaments, there's the 2021 World Cup in Australia and then they come back for India for Champions Trophy, so a lot of ICC money is the back end money.
- We are here to accommodate. We are here to make sure that cricketers are at ease to play the game. Whether it is first-class cricket, women's cricket or Indian Premier League, our biggest goal is to to make their life easier with performance.
