Hyderabad: IPL has often been regarded as the game-changer for the Indian cricket. Since its inception in 2008 IPL has changed the outlook of Indian cricket.

The cash-rich league is known for its financial might and flamboyance. Though IPL received a plethora of accolades for being the launching pad of young talents, on many occasions controversies in the Indian T20 league marred the spirit of cricket.

With the stage set for its new season, we will have a look at major controversies that rocked IPL and Indian cricket at large.

Harbhajan slaps Sreesanth

Harbhajan Singh slapped Sreesanth in IPL 2008.
  • In 2008 IPL, Mumbai Indians spinner Harbhajan Singh slapped Sreesanth who was playing for Kings XI Punjab. Entire cricketing world was stunned with the development.
  • Bhajji was fined his entire match fee and was subsequently suspended for the remainder of the season.

Ravindra Jadeja banned for a year

Ravindra Jadeja is a vital cog of CSK.
  • In 2010 IPL, Ravindra Jadeja fell in big trouble due to a contract dispute. The all-rounder was bargaining for lucrative deals without renewing his contract with the Rajasthan Royals which led to his suspension.

Lalit Modi banned for life

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi.
  • The inventor of IPL Lalit Modi who showed the world how to utilize the might of cricket for commercial purpose. But, in 2010, then IPL chairman Lalit Modi was dethroned from his post owing to his involvement in money laundering. In 2013, he was found guilty and BCCI banned him for life.

Spot-fixing

Rajasthan Royals' Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan.
  • What could be the worst for gentleman's game cricket? Fixing that erodes the credibility of the game! Indian cricket's money-spinner IPL once confronted the same situation.
  • In 2015 Rajasthan Royals' Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were banned for life for their involvement in spot-fixing scandal.
  • The incident put a question mark on IPL's existence as it rocked the entire cricketing eco-system in the nation.

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals suspended

RR and CSK were suspended from IPL for two years.
  • Subsequently, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were banned after being found guilty in fixing.
  • The apex court of India suspended CSK and RR for two years- 2016 and 2017 IPL- before they made a return to the league in 2018.
