Pune: Team India skipper Virat Kohli notched up a few astonishing records en route to his career-best Test score, 254 not out, against South Africa on Friday on the second day of the second Test here at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Riding on Kohli's 254 India posted a massive 601/5 first innings total. Later, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami have reduced the visitors to 36 for 3.

Here are the records that Kohli scripted on Friday.

254 not out, the highest score by an Indian captain

Kohli's 254* is the highest individual score by an Indian captain, surpassing his record of 243 against Sri Lanka in Delhi in 2017/18.

Goes past Tendulkar, Sehwag

By slamming his seventh double century, Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, both of whom had hit six double hundreds in their stellar careers, to become the Indian with the most number of double tons in Tests.

Virat Kohli now has seven double hundreds in Test cricket, most by any Indian batsman in Tests.
3rd cricketer to slam double tons vs 6 different teams

The Indian captain also became the third cricketer after Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara and Younis Khan of Pakistan to hit double tons against six different Test-playing nations.

Double ton vs Australia still a dream for Kohli

Of the seven teams Kohli has played against so far -- Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and Bangladesh -- Australia remains the only team against whom he hasn't scored a double hundred. His highest score against the Aussies is 169.

1st double ton in 2016

Kohli first scored a double century against the West Indies in Antigua in 2016, before repeating the feat against Bangladesh in Hyderabad the following year.

Broke Don Bradman's record

During the course of his innings, Kohli also went past Australian legend Don Bradman to become the player with the most 150-plus scores as Test captain. While Bradman had achieved the feat eight times in his career, Kohli has now done it nine times.

Virat Kohli broke Don Bradman's record of most 150-plus scores as a Test captain.

Tied with legends

Michael Clarke, Mahela Jayawardene, Brian Lara and Graeme Smith are all tied at the third spot as they all achieved the milestone seven times.

4th fastest to score 26 Test hundreds

Friday's ton also saw Kohli becoming the fourth-fastest player to score 26 Test hundreds. He also equalled Ricky Ponting's record of 19 Test tons as captain.
