Hyderabad: India batsman Parthiv Patel announced retirement from the international cricket on Wednesday. Parthiv is 35 years old and last played international cricket in 2016.
The left-hand batsman has played 25 Tests, 38 ODIs and a just two T20Is for India. In domestic cricket, he featured in 194 first-class matches for Gujarat.
He made his international debut in 2002 where he became the youngest to keep wickets in Test cricket. When he made his debut he was 17 years and 153 days.
Patel faded into time with the emergence of wicketkeepers like Dinesh Karthik and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
He made his Test debut two years and two months before he figured in his first Ranji Trophy match in November 2004 in Ahmedabad.
“I remember the match vividly. We should have won that match against Delhi. I played against some established players on the circuit like Ashish Nehra, Aakash Chopra, Ajay Jadeja, Gautam Gambhir, Mithun Manhas, Amit Bhandari, Sarandeep Singh, Vijay Dahiya. Delhi was 102 for nine chasing 156. We almost won. It was a good start to my career,” Parthiv had told a media organisation.
Other than his Test career, Parthiv was an as good cricketer in T20 cricket as well. He added value to every team he played for in the Indian Premier League. He was a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in IPL 2020.
The last time southpaw played for India was in 2016. With wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha injured, Parthiv was called to test team duty for the third test in Mohali. He proved the selectors' decision was right with two good innings including an unbeaten 67 runs from 54 balls in the second innings which led India to victory.
