Wellington: Ishant Sharma bagged his 11th five-wicket haul in Tests as India bowled out New Zealand for 348 runs in their first innings on Day 3 of the first Test at Basin Reserve here. The Black Caps have a lead of 183 runs as India will come out to bat after lunch.
India started Day 3 with a bang as Jasprit Bumrah removed New Zealand wicketkeeper/batsman BJ Watling (14) on the very first ball of the day. Moments later, Ishant Sharma removed Tim Southee to put the Black Caps on backfoot.
However, Trent Boult, who was removed by Ishant, played an entertaining cameo of 38 off 24 deliveries while Kyle Jamieson and Colin de Grandhomme added 71 runs for the eighth wicket as the Kiwis' last three wickets frustrated India and added 123 runs to the total.
Later, Ravichandran Ashwin broke the stand by removing Jamieson for 44. Ashwin then removed de Grandhomme for 43.
On the other hand, New Zealand's innings with the bat was all about partnerships. Their top order constructed a few handy ones with the best being between Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson which accounted for more than 90. The middle order failed to make an impact but the lower-order covered up for them.
Earlier, Williamson scored a brilliant 89 to put the Black Caps ahead. However, India clawed their way right back into the game by the end of the second day.
At Stumps on Day 2, New Zealand had gained a 51-run lead but had also lost their top five batsmen, including Williamson and Taylor. The hosts were 216/5 when umpires called off early stumps due to bad light.
The Black Caps were ruthless with the ball as they bowled out India for a paltry 165 in their first innings. Debutant pacer Jamieson and Southee came out with splendid bowling performances as the visitors lost their last five wickets adding just 43 runs to their overnight score of 122.
The first wicket to fall in the day was that of Rishabh Pant (19) as he got run-out after having a mix-up with Ajinkya Rahane.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who came in next, couldn't stay long at the crease and was sent back on the very first ball by Southee. Rahane, who was holding India's hopes for a big score, also failed to add much and became the third scalp of Southee after contributing with 46.
However, Mohammad Shami did play a nice, little cameo towards the end of the innings and contributed with valuable 21 runs to help get the team past the 150-run mark. Though, he didn't find much support from Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah who could manage just 5 and 0* respectively.
