The 25-year-old wicket-keeper batsman has represented Sri Lanka in 44 Tests and 76 ODIs. Mendis was part of the national squad which had resumed training after the COVID-19 lockdown.
Sri Lanka's international assignments, including a tour by India, have been cancelled due to the pandemic.
Earlier in May, medium Sri Lanka pacer Shehan Madushanka was arrested for possessing heroin. The cricketer was also charged for breaking the lockdown rules.
SLC CEO Ashley de Silva had said, "We have not been officially informed on this yet. He is a contracted player. We will take action to suspend his contract if he carries a drug charge."
Madushanka's arrest was the first time a contracted player was remanded over a drug charge. The cricketer and his friend were arrested on May 23 for possessing heroin.
According to reports, Shehan Madushanka was driving his car when police caught and found two grams of heroin. “Madushanka was stopped while driving with another person in a car during a nationwide coronavirus curfew. He was carrying just over two grams of heroin when detained in the town of Pannala on Sunday,” a police official had said.
