Kapil Dev complaints chest pain, undergoes successful angioplasty

Dev led India to its first World Cup triumph in 1983 against West Indies. The former captain also suffers from diabetes.

India's World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has undergone successful angioplasty at a hospital in New Delhi after complaints of chest pain.

According to the statement released by the hospital, Dev, 62, is in a stable condition and is expected to get discharged soon.

"Former Indian Cricket captain Mr. Kapil Dev, Age 62 years, came to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute (Okhla Road) emergency department at 1:00 am on 23rd October with a complaint of chest pain. He was evaluated and an emergency coronary Angioplasty was performed by Dr. Atul Mathur, Director of Cardiology Department, in the middle of night. Currently, he is admitted in ICU and under close supervision of Dr. Atul Mathur and his team. Mr. Kapil Dev is stable now and he is expected to get discharged in couple of days," the statement said.

Politician Shashi Tharoor, also an avid cricket fan shared his concern on social media. Former cricketers, including all-rounder Irfan Pathan, Kirti Azad and Suresh Raina, took to Twitter and prayed for his speedy recovery.

Dev led India to its first World Cup triumph in 1983 against West Indies. The former captain also suffers from diabetes.

For India, he has represented in 131 Test scoring 5258 runs with 8 centuries to his name. Considered as one of the greatest all-rounder India has ever produced, Dev has dismissed 434 batsmen and has 23 five-wicket hauls.

In 225 ODIs, Dev has scored 3783 runs and took 253 wickets at an average of 27.45.
