The Spirits, The Farwell wins Best Feature, Parasite Best International Film

The 35th Film Independent Spirit Awards was held in Santa Monica, California. The Farewell was named Best Feature, Parasite won Best International Film, Adam Sandler was named Best Male Lead for his role in Uncut Gems. For more updates scroll below.

Washington: Chinese-born, American-raised director Lulu Wang's dramedy The Farewell was named Best Feature at the 35th Film Independent Spirit Awards held on Saturday, in Santa Monica, California.

The Spirits are a day-before-Oscar tradition, honouring independent films with budgets of $22 million or less. A number of the films up for the best picture at the Oscars had budgets surpassing $100 million.

The Farewell also took home a Spirit for Chinese actor Zhao Shuzhen, who won Best Supporting Female for performance in the film. Shuzhen was not present at the ceremony because of the Coronavirus,

South Korean satire Parasite won Best International Film. In his acceptance speech, writer-producer-director Bong Joon Ho recalled seeing a rat at one of the film's first screenings in New York City, thinking it would bring good luck to the movie.

The American Safdie brothers' drama Uncut Gems was the night's top winner, in terms of award count, with Adam Sandler named Best Male Lead, as well for editing and director, Best Female Lead was presented to Renee Zellweger for Judy and Best Supporting Male to Willem Dafoe for The Lighthouse.

The 92nd Academy Awards are set for Sunday (9 FEB 2020) in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles.
