Leonardo DiCaprio commits $5 Million to aid Amazon Fires

Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio has promised USD 5 million towards the preservation of the Amazon rainforest with his new environmental fund with Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth.

Washington D.C.: Leonardo DiCaprio has contributed towards the preservation of the Amazon rainforest as wildfires continue to damage the lush greenery of the planet.

Leonardo's new environmental fund with Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth has pledged USD 5 million towards the preservation of the Amazon rainforest.

The organization managing the fund is titled as Earth Alliance. The money is being distributed under an emergency Amazon Forest Fund, as per reports.

The official Twitter of Earth Alliance wrote, "#EarthAlliance has formed an emergency Amazon Forest Fund with $5m to focus critical resources for indigenous communities and other local partners working to protect the biodiversity of the Amazon against the surge of fires."

The money will be divided between five local organisations which are combating the fires, protecting indigenous lands and providing relief to the communities impacted.

The organizations include the Instituto Associacao Floresta Protegida (Kayapo), Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), Instituto Kabu (Kayapo), Instituto Raoni (Kayapo) and the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA).

According to the media reports, discussion on the Amazon wildfires was brought up during the ongoing G7 Summit in Biarritz.

Brazil has witnessed 72,843 fires in this year, half out of which were reported in the Amazon itself.

On the work front, DiCaprio's latest release Once Upon a Time in Hollywood released on July 26 raked in USD 180.2 million globally till August 19.

The movie hit the Indian big screens on August 15, locking horns with Akshay Kumar-starrer Mission Mangal and John Abraham's Batla House.
