Washington: Jane Fonda says her arrest at a protest on October 18 outside the U.S. Capitol was in support of a Green New Deal to fight climate change and transform the U.S. economy.
"You know, I'm almost 82 years old. In fact, I'll probably celebrate my 82nd birthday under arrest because it's in December. I've had a good life and we're facing potential catastrophe. This is the last decade in human history when changing course can save unimaginable numbers of lives and species. We have to do this and it's really hard, what we have to do -- because it's systemic change and it needs to happen very quickly," Fonda said in an interview.
The longtime activist and star of Netflix's Grace and Frankie was one of 17 climate protesters arrested Friday on charges of unlawful demonstration.

She'll also be lobbying U.S. lawmakers to support a Green New Deal framework like the one put forward earlier this year by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Sen. Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts.
"We're asking members of Congress to support a Green New Deal. It's not a policy. It's a framework. It's a conceptual framework of the vastness and depth of the original New Deal back in the '30s. You know what Franklin Delano Roosevelt did in his first 100 days, largely by executive order, was transform the country and lift people out of despair and desperation," she said.
