Mumbai: Actor Varun Dhawan has transferred money directly into the accounts of 200 dancers who work in Bollywood films and have been severely hit by the pandemic-related lockdown, according to sources.

Raj Surani, a former background dancer who now works as a coordinator for songs, said to a leading portal, "Varun Dhawan has helped the needy dancers. He has worked with a lot of them in three dance films. He was very concerned about how the dancers are managing their livelihood. He promised to help them and try and address their problems."

Earlier, there were reports that celebs including Sidharth Malhotra and Shahid Kapoor have extended financial support to the background dancers.

"There are many dancers who continue to face issues with their landlords over rent. There are others who have ailing parents and there are seniors who need medicine from time to time. We are thankful to all those who are helping the dancers. Though shooting has begun but dancers will have to wait for a really long time before they can go back on sets," said Raj.

On the work front, Varun is currently awaiting the release of his upcoming film Coolie No. 1 co-starring Sara Ali Khan in the lead. The film was supposed to release on May 1 this year. However, it was postponed indefinitely due to the lockdown.
