Mumbai: Popular playback singer Sonu Nigam, who is currently self-isolating himself along with his family in Dubai during lockdown, is at the receiving end for his comment on azaan which he made three years ago.

The ghost of azaan comment is back to haunt Sonu yet again as he is currently spending quarantine days in Dubai. The Har Ghadi Badal Rahi Hai fame singer has often shared his honest opinion on various socio-political issues.

While he has been outspoken about many topics like playing the national anthem in public places, the #MeToo movement and azaan loudspeakers, it is the latter that puts him in hot water yet again.

Tweeples are having a field day digging out a tweet of Sonu which he apparently wouldn't want to rake up from his timeline. One user described the singer's situation with an age-old proverb, cutting the branch on which one is sitting.

"Once upon a time, Sonu Nigam has the problem with Azaan! He is in Dubai Now a days! Some peple in Gulf criticised him 4 his tweet related to Azaan on twitter! Resultant, he deactivated his twitter account! Moral of story, don't cut that branch of whre U hve 2 stay!." the tweet reads.

Another one shared his tweet and said, "One of the famous Indian singer SONU NIGAM (@sonunigam ) said to Ban #Azaan 3 years ago . He is now in #Dubai, After the Twitter outrage , he deactivated his twitter account."

"This dude "Sonu Nigam" is a pathetic nincompoop! He had problems wid Loudspeaker & 5 times Azaan in India. Now he's in Dubai whre Mosque & Loudspeakers r found everywhere. Just wanted to knw- Is he now not getting disturbed by 5times Azaan a Day?" wrote another user.

While haters are taking jibes at Sonu, few fans are bating for him on social media and urged Faridabad Police to look into the tweets spreading hate.

For unversed, back then a fatwa came after Nigam’s Twitter outburst on “forced religiousness”, condemning the use of loudspeakers for morning prayers (azaan), created a stir in 2017. Nigam shaved off his hair after a Bengal cleric’s “fatwa” offering Rs 10 lakh to anybody who shaved off the singer's head. Following which, the singer had invited celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim to shave off his hair and also cleared his stand over the entire issue.

Sonu, who was in Himalayas till March 5 decided to join his family in Dubai and said that he won't return till things get normal. The reason he said is that he doesn't want to be stuck in quarantine and burden the already burdened authorities.
