RK Studios' 70-yr-old Ganeshotsav tradition comes to end

The show will no longer go on at the iconic R.K. Studios in Chembur. Randhir Kapoor reveals why the family will not be able to carry on with the tradition of celebrating Ganeshotsav.

Mumbai: With the demolition of RK Studio, the Kapoor family's seven decades old tradition of celebrating Ganeshotsav at the iconic studio have apparently come to an end.

Randhir Kapoor, the eldest son of Raj Kapoor revealed that the Ganeshotsav that took place in year 2018 turned out to be the last for the family to celebrate together since the place no longer belongs to them.

"That was the last Ganesh Chaturthi celebration for us. RK Studios hi nahi raha... to kahan karenge? Papa (Raj Kapoor) started the tradition 70 years ago with a lot of love for the Trunk God, but now, we don’t have a place where we can hold the celebrations the way we did at RK Studios. We all love Bappa and have immense faith in him, but I guess, we can’t continue with the tradition anymore,” Randhir told a leading publication.

Last year, Ranbir, along with his father Rishi Kapoor and uncles Randhir and Rajiv, kept to tradition and celebrated Ganpati Visarjan with full enthusiasm amidst a sea of fans at RK Studios, which was already put up for sale.

RK Studios which used to come alive with Ganpati Visarjan celebrations is now a thing of past as it got demolished on August 9 this year. The studio in May this year was purchased by a private property dealer for real estate development.

Built by Raj Kapoor in 1948, the RK Studios was spread across 2.2 acres and witnessed the shooting of many hits including Barsaat, Awaara, Jaagte Raho, Shree 420, Sangam, Bobby and Prem Rog.
