Javed Akhtar says Khilji saved India from Mongols, triggers debate on Twitter

Javed Akhtar is facing the wrath of social media after his comment on Alauddin Khalji. The renowned lyricist in a recent interview said that it was Khilji who saved India from the brutality of the Mongol armies. While many trolled the veteran screenwriter, he also found the support of admirers on social media.

Mumbai: Javed Akhtar has set Twitter ablaze after praising Alauddin Khalji in a debate with Pakistani-Canadian journalist Tarek Fatah.

On April 28, Javed and Tarek Fatah indulged in a strong debate which has also turned on the backlash on the microblogging site. In a strong debate between these two, Akhtar said that being secular means that we should not tolerate communalism of any kind. He accused Tarek that his focus is only on one side of fundamentalism.

During the debate, Javed said that being secular means that we should not tolerate communalism of any kind. In a nearly hour-long discussion, Javed also accused Tariq of not having read history.

During the debate, Javed said that it was Allaudin Khilji who saved India from the murderous Mongols four times. In his reply, Tarek brought up an attack on Nalanda University by Khilji dynasty.

While the two discussed nationalism, religious identity and politics of the Indian subcontinent, it was Javed's Khilji comment which has set the Twitter abuzz.

While many trolled Javed for his Khilji comment, few stood in support of the ace lyricist.
