Mumbai: Versatile actors Rajkumar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar are all set to share the screen for the first time. The actors who are known for picking up challenging roles will be next seen in Badhaai Do which revolves around a gay man and a lesbian stuck in a lavender marriage.

Badhaai Do is written by Akshat Ghildial and Suman Adhikary who also wrote Ayushmann Khurrana, Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta starrer Badhaai Ho. Harshavardhan, who helmed Hunterrr in 2015, will be directing Rajkummar, Bhumi fronted Badhaai Do.

For the second instalment of Badhaai Ho franchise, Rajkummar will be seen playing the role of a Delhi cop, who is the only male police officer in a mahila thana while Bhumi will be essaying the role of a PT teacher.

The story reportedly is about a lavender marriage between Raj and Bhumi. The term lavender marriage was coined to describe a marriage between a man and a woman in which one, or both, parties are homosexual. In 1930s it was used to keep gay stars’ sexuality under tight wraps.

After Hansal Mehta's Aligarh, Badhaai Do will be Rajkummar's second outing as a gay man. Back in 2016, Rao had said that the cliche representation of gay people in films bothers him. "I am uncomfortable with how gay people are shown in comedies and films... I don't agree with it. I anyway have a problem with anything that is caricaturist or over-the-top in nature," said the actor.

Talking about why she lapped up the film, Bhumi had once said that she had played varied characters but her role in Badhaai Do "is truly special." She loved the script since the first narration as she found that the subject is packaged in the most entertaining way.

For pairing up with Raj, the Bala actor said, "Since this is the first time I will be working with Rajkummar, I am super excited as we begin our shoot soon. Badhaai Ho has been one of my favourites and it feels amazing to take this franchise forward,"

Backed up by Junglee Pictures, Badhaai Do will go on floors in January 2021.
