FIR against celebs

Mumbai: After a number of celebrities wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make lynching of Muslims, Dalits and other minorities in the country a 'non-bailable' offence, a case has been filed against Anurag Kashyap, Aparna Sen, Shyam Benegal, Mani Ratnam among the other personalities.

A case was lodged against celebrities after an order was passed by Chief Judicial Magistrate Surya Kant Tiwari two months before a petition filed by local advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha.

Ojha said signatories of the letter were named as accused in his petition, in which they allegedly "tarnished the image of the country and undermined the impressive performance of the Prime Minister" besides "supporting secessionist tendencies".

According to a news report, "The CJM had passed the order on August 20, accepting my petition upon the receipt of which an FIR was lodged today at the Sadar police station here."

The police said the FIR was lodged under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those relating to sedition, public nuisance, hurting religious feelings and insulting with an intent to provoke breach of peace.

In a letter addressed to PM, celebrities across different fields emphasized the devastating cases of lynching reported by National Crime Records Bureau.

They also called out Modi for not taking a strong step against the heinous offence except for criticizing the incidents.

The celebs also pointed out the atrocities happening in the name of religion emphasizing that 'Jai Shri Ram' has become a "provocative war-cry".

The letter was concluded saying that the celebrities hope their suggestions will be taken as anxiety of genuinely concerned Indians towards the fate of their nation.
