Mumbai: Filmmaker Onir took to his Twitter to express his faith in justice severed in the case of Bilkis Bano who was gang-raped during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The Supreme Court ordered the Gujarat government to give a compensation of Rs 50 lacs, a job and accommodation regarding the years' old mishap with Bilkis Bano.
Expressing his condolence towards Bilkis' unparalleled agony and injustice till the year, Onir said that he is glad that there is still some justice, irrespective how late it is.
"Nothing will ever compensate for what she lost and the horror she has lived. Still I am glad that there is some justice/ however late it is. #BilkisBano," tweeted Onir, along with the news link.
On March 3, 2002, Bilkis Bano's family was attacked by a mob at Randhikpur village near Ahmedabad right after the Godhra riots.
Bilkis Bano was five months pregnant at the time when she was gang-raped. Her two-and-half-year old daughter was also snatched away from her arms and smashed on a rock. During the riots, 14 members of her family members were killed.
On January 21, 2008, a special court convicted 11 men for raping Bilkis and murdering her family members. The accused were also sentenced to life imprisonment while 7 persons were acquitted including the policemen and doctors.
Later, the policemen and doctors acquitted were convicted for not performing their duties and tampering of the evidence in the case.
Cut to present, the Supreme Court has given a two-week deadline to Gujarat government to compensate Bilkis Bano with Rs 50 lacs, a job and an accommodation.
