Mumbai: Music maestro A.R. Rahman welcomed the Union government's decision to revise the draft version of the National Education Policy (NEP). Earlier the NEP had objected to making Hindi as a compulsory subject in the non-Hindi speaking states.

Rahman tweeted, "Beautiful solution. Hindi is not compulsory in Tamil Nadu… draft has been rectified!”

The new version of the draft policy which has been introduced states, "Students who wish to change one or more of the three languages they are studying may do so in Grade 6 and 7, so long as they are able to still demonstrate proficiency in three languages (one language at the literature level) in their modular board examinations sometime during secondary school."

The original draft emphasized on a three-language formula which included Hindi and English along with the regional language in the non-Hindi states. The Hindi-speaking states were suggested to include English and Indian languages from other parts of India.

Political parties of the non-Hindi states mainly Karnataka and Tamil Nadu protested against the particular draft.

Tamil Nadu leaders resisted the move and said that the state won't tolerate any sort of imposition. Similarly, Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy said that the centre cannot force any languages on others.

Minister of Human Resource Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishak told ANI, “The committee was formed for drafting New Educational Policy. That committee has given its report. The report of the committee is only received by the ministry. That's the policy. No language will be imposed on any state.” (With inputs from ANI)
