Gurugram: We live in a world where each member of a family has their own individual interests. Gone are the days, when families used to sit down to watch the same movies at the same time on box televisions. With the advent of on-demand TV through different streaming apps, it is not entirely unusual for families to have multiple TVs or computers. Therefore, it is now more important than ever to take out time to reconnect. And what better way to bond than over games?

The mere mention of the word “game” lights up everyone’s faces - irrespective of their age or gender. Since a young age, my grandparents and I have been playing carrom every weekend. We have a fixed time and no exceptions are allowed - no matter how busy either of us maybe. The feeling of sitting with them and bonding over winning/losing is absolutely priceless.

When my friends and I used to get together, it was mandatory to have a game night. We could spend hours playing rounds of Monopoly and Uno. Every time one of us beat another, the emotions expressed would be riotous! As one of us would gloat after winning, the other would whine after losing. Another favourite was playing Dumb Charades in teams of 5! Apart from the fun of ganging up against one another, it also helped build greater trust and communication skills between all of us.

However, as one-third of the world’s population is locked in their homes, these game nights will never be the same it seems. Stuck in different cities and countries all over the world, who knows when we’ll be able to reunite? Fortunately, we live in the digital era - where everything is a few taps away, even a game night. It is no surprise that the pandemic has hampered our usual weekend plans this year. But a social activity we can still connect on is online games.

Most traditional and online games can be played on video conferencing apps with friends, even when you are social distancing! I can connect with my cousins from across the globe over a simple game of Ludo on my phone. While the experience may not be the same entirely, it still is just as entertaining.

Not only is gaming a means of bonding, but it is also an activity with plenty of room for learning! To win, you need to follow directions, stay patient, take turns while staying friendly with your peers. Many times, you also need to strategise, learn from your mistakes and pick on nonverbal cues. A game night is an opportunity for us to learn how to develop a good sportsmanship.

Ultimately, a little friendly competition and rounds of loud laughter can uplift anyone’s mood. Gaming virtually or in person, with friends or family will truly help you bond together like glue and create a bank of good memories you’ll cherish for life!

However, one has to be careful while playing games, selecting the games, and also ensuring that we do not fall prey to anything wrong. Let the online games be played with a lot of caution and precaution.
