Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh):As many as 12 miscreants have been booked for raping minor girl - a student of a government polytechnic college at Sipri Bazar in Jhansi, police said.
The matter came to light after a complaint was lodged against youth and his friends at Sipri Bazar Police Station.
According to the police complaint, the accused youth and his friends surrounded the girl when she was on her way back from college. They took her to a secluded spot at the college hostel and gang-raped her.
They also shot a video of the act and threatened the girl that they would make it go viral if she told anyone about the incident. The accused had been using the video to blackmail the complainant and had been extorting money from her.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched a manhunt to nab the accused who was absconding after the incident. The girl will be taken for a medical examination.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jhansi, Dinesh Kumar P said, "The incident occurred some days before in Sipri Bazar area. The accused reportedly threatened the girl of consequences if she informed anyone. Apparently, this is why the girl did not inform her family members about it. The incident surfaced after the girl's family lodged a complaint against the accused and his friends."
"We have identified one of the accused and our teams are raiding possible hideouts of the remaining accused. All the accused are adults and are of the same area. Efforts are also being made to prevent the circulation of the video online," he said.
The accused have been booked under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
