Tension ran high in Kanpur town in Uttar Pradesh after the BSP leader, Pintu Sengar was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in the broad daylight on Saturday.

Kanpur:A leader of Bahujan Samajwadi Party's has been allegedly shot dead over a land dispute by unidentified miscreants near Chakeri police station in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur on Saturday.

The deceased leader has been identified as Pintu Sengar, who gifted 'land on the moon' to BSP chief, Mayawati.

ASP Chakeri Dinesh Kumar told ETV Bharat that the incident took place at around 2:30 PM at Chakeri area today while Sengar was in his car.

"Four bike-borne miscreants came to him and opened fire at him before fleeing the spot. Sengar received several bullet injuries," Kumar said.

Though Sengar was immediately rushed to Regency Hospital in Kanpur, doctors here, declared him “brought dead”.

Though the exact reason behind the attack remained unknown, Chakeri police have launched a probe into the incident, sources said.

"The suspects are on the run and the efforts are on to nab them. The investigation into the matter is underway and an FIR has been registered. It is suspected that the miscreants killed Sengar over a land dispute. However, the preliminary investigation has revealed that it was a pre-planned murder," police sources added.

Tension prevailed in the area soon after the incident and irate locals staged road blockade at Chakeri area demanding immediate arrest of the assailants. Reportedly, the vehicular movement has come to a grinding halt due to the road blockade.
