Hyderabad: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) where the hearing of Kulbhushan Jadhav case is going on between India and Pakistan has so far heard 168 cases out of which some are still in progress and some have been solved.

The International Court of Justice

• The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations located at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands).
• It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began functioning in April 1946.
• The court comprises 15 judges, who serve the office term of nine years by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council.
• The official languages of the court are English and French.

Why was it created:

In plain words, to hear and decide on international disputes.

Functioning of the Court:

The court entertains two types of cases -

Contentious cases: Only States Members of the United Nations and other States which have become the Statute of the Court or which have accepted its jurisdiction under certain conditions may be parties to the contentious cases.

Advisory proceedings: Advisory proceedings before the Court are only open to five organs of the United Nations and 16 specialized agencies of the United Nations family or affiliated organizations.
