Toronto:Canadahas updated the advisory for its citizens in India asking them to "stay vigilant and exercise caution" in the context of recent developments as there are calls for protests and some "negative sentiment" towards Canada on social media.

The India travel advice page which was last updated on Sunday local time, has latest updates on safety and security – calls for protests section, entry and exit requirements section.

It also dealt with suspension of visa services. "As of September 21, 2023, Indian visa services in Canada have been suspended until further notice." The advisory read.

"In the context of recent developments in Canada and in India, there are calls for protests and some negative sentiment towards Canada on social media. Please remain vigilant and exercise caution," it said under safety and security section of the official page.

Tensions flared between India and Canada following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's explosive allegations of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, on his country's soil on June 18 in British Columbia. It is pertinent to note India designated Nijjar as a Khalistani terrorist in 2020.

India has rebuffed all the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated". In a tit-for-tat move, India expelled a senior Canadian diplomat after Ottawa expelled an Indian official over the case. "In the context of recent developments in Canada and in India, there are calls for protests and some negative sentiment towards Canada on social media. Please remain vigilant and exercise caution," the Canadian government said in an update on Sunday.

This comes after New Delhi issued a similar advisory for Indian nationals and students living in Canada and halted visa services late last week, Global News reported. (with PTI inputs)
