Elyakim, Northern Israel: Israel's military on Wednesday carried out a military exercise based on an attack by Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, deploying tanks and infantry.

The exercise comes after accusations by Israel last month that Hezbollah had carried out "provocative" activity along the Lebanese-Israeli frontier, saying it would complain to the U.N. Security Council.

Israel and Hezbollah fought a month-long war in 2006 that ended in a stalemate, followed by a UN-brokered truce, which barred Hezbollah from conducting military activity along the frontier.

Israel has also warned for years of what it calls Iran and Hezbollah's "entrenchment" in southern Syria close to Israeli army positions.

There have been several drone attacks near the Golan Heights in recent months targeting Syrians said to be working with Hezbollah, according to Syrian opposition activists.

Colonel Israel Friedler, head of the Northern Command Elyakim training base said the drill began last week and is expected to continue for weeks.

He said he believes Israel is well prepared and more powerful than Hezbollah, but faces a challenge in an enemy that is embedded in civilian areas.

"It's not a fair fight because we are not trying to hit their citizens" and "even though they are trying to hit us, they are hiding themselves in their houses and in the tunnels," he said.
